ATTENTION ALL NATIVE AMERICAN ARTISTS
On Tuesday, April 16, 2013, Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College acquired the former L'Anse hospital facility from Baraga County Memorial Hospital. Tim Shanahan, OCC Board of Regents Chairman, and Tim Zwickey, BCMH Chief Executive Officer, conducted the signing at the College's main campus in Baraga. Also in attendance were Debbie Parrish, OCC President; Joseph O'Leary, OCC legal counsel, and Don Funke, OCC Board of Regents member. OCC President, Debbie Parrish, finalized the deal with a $1.00 check presented to Tim Zwickey.
Plan's for the College's East Campus in L'Anse include renovation of the facility for nine additional classrooms, office space, small resource library, new Business and Native American studies programs, entrepreneurial center, wellness center, and one year certificate programs. The former Carmody/Sora building will house the OCC Child Care Center for students attending late afternoon/evening classes. The cafeteria will provide daily lunches and serve as a business hub for emerging small businesses in the food industry. Additional space will be leased as it becomes available. While the Board of Regents discussed culinary arts and federal certified nursing assistant programs, those are tentative future offerings. Construction for the facility will be done in stages, the first being an upgrade to the current heating system as well as additional classroom and office space. The former patient rooms will be used for staff and faculty offices. Expansion of the student services staff will include a developmental program, bookstore, and student center. Funding for the renovation includes approximately $975,000 from a Department of Education grant.
The first phase of the project is anticipated to be complete in the Fall. OCC maintenance workers have been hired to begin basic remodeling. Bianco Plumbing & Heating was awarded the bid for the heating system. A construction crew will begin demolition when the plans are finalized.
